UN envoy warns Lebanon in danger

UN envoy Terje Roed-Larsen on Thursday warned that Lebanon was facing the most dangerous situation in its history since the end of the 1975-1990 Civil War.
“Lebanon today is facing the most dangerous situation in its history after the end of the civil war,” the Kuwaiti KUNA news agency quoted the UN envoy for the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1559 as telling reporters Thursday night. The UN envoy’s comments come after Former Director of Saudi Arabia General Intelligence Directorate Prince Turki Bin Faisal al-Saud said on Wednesday that Lebanon was on the edge of a civil war.

Lebanon has been buffeted by political crises and security incidents since the start of the Syrian conflict in the spring of 2011. Four car bombs have rocked the country in the last two years, while recurring Syria-linked clashes have rocked Tripoli. In recent weeks media reports have said that the Syrian regime backed by Hezbollah fighters are poised to launch an offensive in the Qalamoun region of Syria along Lebanon’s eastern Beqaa. [Link]
