High cost and poor service to limit demand for 4G services

BEIRUT: The relatively high prices of the fourth generation mobile services and dongles in Lebanon may discourage customers from the subscribing to the new product, an international business organization said.

According to Business Monitor International, 4G services in Lebanon will be considerably more expensive than in other countries in the region. It noted that both operators – Alfa and touch – would sell 5 gigabytes for $69 and 10 GB for $99.It added that such prices exceed those offered in Saudi Arabia where 5 GB are sold for $53 and unlimited access is offered for $93, as well as in Kuwait where 12 GB are sold for $59 and 35 GB are offered for around $86.

“As a result, demand for 4G services in Lebanon is expected to be minimal during the first phases of the launch, given the high price of smartphones that support such technology, the high prices of the service itself, and consumers’ experience with the slow development and poor quality of 3G networks,” BMI said.
